Cornish law firm Murrell Associates Achieves B Corp Status

Murrell Associates, a leading law firm based in Truro, Cornwall, today announces that it has achieved B Corp Certification, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment toward environmental and social responsibility.

The certification, awarded by B Lab UK, an independent non-profit organisation, recognises businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. Murrell Associates joins a growing number of B Corp-certified businesses in Cornwall, with the region fast becoming a hub for organisations that demonstrate a positive impact on people, communities and the planet.

To achieve its certification, the firm underwent a rigorous assessment to evaluate its environmental and social performance in five key areas; Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers.

Murrell Associates was noted for:

  • A governance structure that prioritises ethical decision-making, and underscores a commitment to contributing positively to the community, clients and the environment.
  • A thorough supplier screening process that ensures it works with businesses that align with its ethical standards. The firm also has a sourcing policy that prioritises local suppliers.
  • A commitment to fair pay, and a focus on social mobility and diversity in hiring, ensuring opportunities are open to people from all backgrounds.
  • Implementation of green office practices, such as using non-toxic paper products and reducing energy consumption across working practices, whether in-office or remotely.
  • Providing paid volunteer days for its team to support local community projects.
The team had support from the local business community to guide it through the certification process. In 2023 it joined the B23 Initiative, run by Wildanet, the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and Leap, which brought together like-minded businesses to support one another in their B Corp journeys. Murrell Associates’ long standing client Finisterre — a Cornwall-based sustainable clothing brand which achieved B Corp certification in 2018  — offered support and guidance along the way too.

Jenny Harbord, Partner at Murrell Associates, said, "We're excited to be part of a thriving community of B Corps in Cornwall. We send our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in the B23 programme and Tom Kaye, founder of Finisterre, for their inspiration and encouragement in completing the assessment.

“This accreditation not only celebrates the progress we've made, but also creates exciting opportunities for growth as we focus on enhancing the areas identified in the business impact assessment.

“Our B Corp status will also allow us to support our clients in meeting their own social and environmental objectives. We’re proud to be the 28th law firm in the UK to achieve B Corp certification and with nearly 10,000 firms across the country, there’s a growing opportunity for more advisors to align their services with the values of social and environmental responsibility."

Chris Turner, Executive Director of B Lab UK, said, “We are delighted to welcome Murrell Associates to the B Corp community. This is a movement of companies who are committed to changing how business operates and believe business really can be a force for good. We know that Murrell Associates are going to be a fantastic addition to the community and will continue driving the conversation forward.”

Murrell Associates joins a community of 8,000 businesses globally who have certified as B Corps, and more than 2,000 in the UK including The Guardian, innocent, Finisterre and Abel & Cole.
